Modern Reef at Interzoo 2026: Reef Terraformer and Reef Engine CORE

Modern Reef booth at Interzoo 2026

At Interzoo 2026, one of the most interesting booths from a technical point of view was certainly that of Modern Reef, a brand that in recent years has built a very recognizable proposal in the world of marine aquarium keeping. Not only supplementation, not only bacteria, not only products for daily aquarium management, but a rather precise vision: helping aquarists build a system that is more stable, more controllable and more consistent over time.

During our tour in Nuremberg, within an Interzoo 2026 that we described in our general editorial as an important but more cautious fair compared with some past editions, Modern Reef impressed us precisely because of the number of new or updated products presented. Some are very specific, others more transversal, but they all point in the same direction: working on prevention, biological stability, coral protection and the overall quality of the marine environment.

Modern Reef at Interzoo 2026 in short: among the most interesting new products we saw Reef Terraformers, Reef Biome, BioBac, Shield, Sentinel, Metal D-Tox and the Reef Engine CORE system. A very technical proposal, designed to work on biological stability, coral protection, water quality, metal management and overall support for the marine aquarium.

The video of Modern Reef at Interzoo 2026

For this article we also prepared a video dedicated to the Modern Reef booth at Interzoo 2026. In just a few minutes we take you in front of the most interesting products presented in Nuremberg, trying to explain not only what we saw, but also why some of these solutions deserve attention in a marine reef aquarium.

The video was created as a support for this in-depth article: some ideas, especially when we talk about biological substrate, bacteria, coral protection and metal management, are easier to understand by seeing the products directly and listening to the explanation given at the booth.

Modern Reef: an increasingly technical proposal

The feeling we had at the Modern Reef booth was that of a company very focused on one precise point: building tools to make the aquarium more stable. We are not talking, therefore, about the classic “miracle product”, but about a series of solutions that work on different aspects of management: bacteria, biological substrate, tissue protection, heavy metals, environmental balance and support for coral growth.

We like this approach because it intercepts one of the strongest needs of modern marine aquarium keeping. Today many aquarists have very high-performance systems, powerful lights, efficient skimmers, precise dosing pumps, ICP analyses and a large amount of data available. But the real challenge always remains the same: turning all this technology into real stability for the animals.

Modern Reef seems to be moving exactly in this direction, offering products that do not work only on a single parameter, but on the system as a whole. And this is where some of the new products seen at Interzoo 2026 become even more interesting than the individual product itself. At least on paper.

Reef Terraformer: improving the biological environment of the aquarium

One of the products that intrigued us the most was Reef Terraformer. The name is already quite evocative, but the product description helps us better understand its philosophy: Modern Reef presents it as a solution designed to improve the overall quality of the marine aquarium environment, acting on the biological and chemical conditions that contribute to the long-term stability of the marine aquarium.

The concept is interesting because it is not limited to a single parameter. Reef Terraformer is designed to support the aquarium as a whole: clearer water, cleaner decorations and sand, more efficient biological filtration and an overall more stable ecosystem. In other words, it does not work directly “on the coral” like a traditional food or supplement, but on the environment that allows corals to live better.

According to the manufacturer’s instructions, dosing is linked to the Modern Reef Proportional Consumption Reef Keeping System: every day, 0.2 ml of Reef Terraformer are dosed for every 1 ml of BASE Ca added. It is an interesting approach, because it connects dosing not to the theoretical volume of the aquarium, but to the actual consumption of the system, reducing the risk of overdosing and making management more proportional to the real biological activity of the tank.

Reef Biome and BioBac: two different approaches to bacterial support

Alongside the work on the biological environment, Modern Reef also showed products dedicated to the bacterial component. Among these we saw Reef Biome and BioBac, two products that seem to move in complementary directions: the first as a dry and concentrated microbial blend to support biological balance, the second as a broader-spectrum bacterial blend.

Reef Biome is presented as a concentrated dry microbial blend, developed to support the biological balance of the marine aquarium, promote the natural degradation of organic waste and contribute to clearer and cleaner water conditions. One interesting aspect is that it is indicated for regular use without added sugars or aggressive carbon sources, therefore with a different philosophy compared with some approaches based on strong carbon dosing.

BioBac, on the other hand, is described as a full-spectrum bacterial blend, with probiotic, nitrifying and purple bacteria. The stated objective is to support the nitrification process and the degradation of substances such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, while also contributing to water clarity, the cleaning of substrate and rocks and the reduction of organic accumulations and excess nutrients.

In our opinion, the point is not to read these products as miraculous shortcuts. The bacterial component in a marine aquarium is complex and must always be included within coherent management. However, it is interesting to see how Modern Reef is trying to offer different tools to support the microbiome of the marine aquarium, distinguishing between continuous support, biological maturation and more targeted interventions.

Shield and Sentinel: coral support and protection

Among the products that caught our attention there are also Shield and Sentinel. The names already make the approach clear: these are not products designed to modify a single water value, but formulas dedicated to supporting corals, their resistance and their ability to overcome more delicate phases.

Shield is presented as a coral care and strengthening formula, developed to support the natural defense system of corals, with special attention to Acropora and other SPS corals. According to Modern Reef, the product works on resistance, regeneration, tissue health, basal growth and recovery of natural color intensity.

It is interesting because in a modern marine aquarium it is not only a matter of pushing growth, but also of helping corals recover better after phases of stress, environmental variations, new additions or moments when the tank is not perfectly stable. The indicated dosage is 1 ml per 100 liters, with the possibility of increasing the dose in the case of stressed or weakened corals.

Sentinel, instead, is described as a support formula for corals subjected to harmful loads or infectious pressure. Modern Reef presents it as a product to be used in specific phases and not as a permanent treatment. This detail is important: Sentinel should not be read as a daily supplement, but as a targeted tool to be included in a broader concept of coral care.

Here too, attention is needed: every intervention in a marine aquarium must be evaluated carefully, especially when dealing with animals in difficulty. But having products designed for precise contexts can be useful, provided they are included in an overall management approach based on observation, stability and correct diagnosis of the problem.

Metal D-Tox and heavy metal management

Another product that deserves attention is Metal D-Tox. In recent years, also thanks to the spread of ICP analyses, the topic of metals in marine aquariums has become much more present. In the past, many problems remained invisible or difficult to interpret; today, instead, we know that some metals can accumulate, interfere with animal health or reveal hidden issues in our system.

Modern Reef Metal D-Tox

Metal D-Tox is presented as a product for the removal of excess heavy metals. Its logic is clearly linked to increasingly analytical aquarium management: action is taken when contamination is suspected or when elevated values are confirmed by an ICP analysis.

The usage instructions are also interesting: the reported dosage is 2-3 ml per 100 liters, with suspension of activated carbon and ozone during treatment. After 48 hours, activated carbon can be reintroduced and used for one week. These are important details, because they remind us that this type of product should not be used blindly, but within a precise procedure.

In this context, Metal D-Tox makes sense especially for aquarists who already work with analyses, observation and targeted corrections. It is not the classic product to use “just in case” without reason, but a tool to consider when the metal problem is real, suspected or documented.

Reef Engine CORE and the Proportional Consumption method

At the booth we also saw Reef Engine CORE, connected to the supplementation and management of the fundamental elements of the aquarium. Modern Reef presents it as an All-in-One Reef Keeping System, now updated in the RKS Reef Engine Core 7.7x High Concentrate version, with a dedicated guide to the Modern Reef Proportional Consumption method.

The concept is very interesting: instead of making management more complicated, Modern Reef focuses on a system in which dosing is linked to the real consumption of the aquarium. In other words: dose by consumption. You measure what the aquarium consumes, let the formula guide dosing and try to keep the system cleaner, more stable and more predictable.

It is a philosophy that connects well with the other products seen at the booth. Reef Engine CORE works on the chemical and supplementation side, while products such as Reef Terraformer, Reef Biome, BioBac, Shield, Sentinel and Metal D-Tox act on the biological environment, bacterial support, coral protection and the management of specific situations. This is precisely the interesting point: Modern Reef does not seem to want to offer only individual bottles, but a coherent management method.

Modern Reef at AcquariaItalia 2026: for the first time in Italy

The most interesting news for the Italian public is that Modern Reef will also be present at AcquariaItalia 2026, the Italian fair dedicated to the aquarium world that will take place at Malpensa Fiere. And it will be a particularly significant presence, because for Modern Reef this will be the first time in Italy.

The brand will be present inside the Aquariatech booth, the official Modern Reef distributor for Italy, where it will be possible to see the products up close and explore the philosophy of the system in greater depth. Just opposite, there will also be a corner dedicated to EuroCorals corals, creating a very interesting connection between products for marine aquarium management and live animals.

Modern Reef is expected to be present for all three days of the event: both during the days open to the public and during the day dedicated to B2B, designed for retailers, distributors, companies and industry professionals. It will therefore be an important opportunity to see the products up close, better understand the brand philosophy and speak directly with those who are bringing this proposal to the Italian market.

For a very technical brand such as Modern Reef, the possibility of meeting aquarists, retailers and professionals in person is particularly important. Some products, in fact, cannot be explained well with a simple image or a commercial sheet: they need to be described, contextualized and connected to the real management of a marine aquarium. The combined presence of Aquariatech, Modern Reef and EuroCorals will make this area particularly interesting for those who want to explore the method and see the direct connection between technology, management and corals.

The people behind the Modern Reef booth

As always, a fair like Interzoo is not only made of products, but also of meetings. At the Modern Reef booth we had the opportunity to talk, discuss the products and better understand the direction of the brand. And this is precisely one of the aspects that make a fair useful: being able to go beyond the catalog and listen directly to the people who work every day on the product and on the market.

A special thank you therefore goes to Modern Reef, to Ali Akil, and to the people who welcomed us at the booth, dedicating their time to us and explaining the new products presented at Interzoo 2026.

What we think

The presence of Modern Reef at Interzoo 2026 seemed to us one of the most interesting from a technical point of view. Not so much for each individual product taken in isolation, but for the overall vision that emerges from the range: supplementation proportional to consumption, bacterial support, improvement of the biological environment, coral protection, metal management and targeted interventions all seem to be part of a single line of reasoning.

It is a proposal that will probably speak especially to the most attentive aquarists, those who are not looking only for a quick product to correct a parameter, but for tools to better understand their system and guide it toward greater stability. In this sense, Reef Terraformer, Reef Biome, BioBac, Shield, Sentinel, Metal D-Tox and Reef Engine CORE clearly express a very precise working philosophy.

Of course, as always, real use, aquarists’ experience and time will tell us how much these products can affect daily management. But the direction seems interesting to us, and the fact that Modern Reef is arriving in Italy for the first time at AcquariaItalia 2026 makes everything even more relevant for our market.
