Limulus is come back!
aprile 18, 2012 by DaniReef.com
Many of you, and especially hobbyists from electronic and aquarium, will remember AQUASMART, the system developed by Limulus, born from the Roberto Buti‘s desire to create a system to manage their marine aquarium, which then evolved until reaching full maturity with the complete system.

You can read a review of the state of the art of its creation here: Aquasmart by Limulus
Unfortunately at some point the system has run aground, its development has been blocked, and for a time there was concern for the continuity of the system.
Today, finally, Limulus is back, the website has been restored, and finally we have heard about AQUASMART II, you can join the forum and indicate the preferences for the development of this wonderful system.
It ‘s useless to say that I am very happy!
Click on the link to go to the site and then to the forum where you can partecipate to the development of the new system.

Return Pumps: tests and real measurements compared
aprile 17, 2012 by DaniReef.com
The last period on DaniReef.com was really full of work and ideas, too bad not only have enough arms to follow all the projects we initiate.
The project of the return pumps is now old and started with the previous article “return pumps: calculating the flow” that I invite you to read, and which proposed an excel file, downloadable, editable with most of the pumps on the market, which were often recommended as return pumps in the forums and among hobbyists. The file made possible from the data of the pumps and the prevalence of each tank, get a pump flow rate calculated for each individual pump.
Although the file would be updated by anyone, I was always curious to know how pumps would behave in reality as well as declared by individual manufacturers.

During the Zoomark of last year we decided to contact some companies in the industry to do a comparative test of the pumps.
Some have enthusiastically joined, in true alphabetical order, Eheim, Tunze and Sicce, and they have provided the pumps subject of our comprensive test.

The truth about salinity in aquarium
marzo 27, 2012 by DaniReef.com
The topic of salinity in an aquarium is a highly controversial topic. There is a lot of misleading and confusion when regarding about this topic. Because this is the case, let’s give some “technical” definitions regarding broadness of this matter.
Salinity is the proportion of the content of all salts contained in the sea water, this is expressed in parts per thousands (‰). For example, if we consider a salinity of 35‰, this would mean that if we would have 1000 grams of solution, so we would have more water than salt, as there would be 35 grams of salt and 965 of pure water. Obviously, this is not a size influenced by the temperature. A common mistake is to consider 35 grams of salt per liter of pure water, this is wrong, as shown above from the definition of salinity.

AndreaNegu goes from T5 to Elos Epower with the new blue EliteXP
febbraio 6, 2012 by DaniReef.com
Recently, we talk a lot about led lighting, although it is my opinion that for SPS corals is today still preferable a traditional HQi lamp.
In the future we will definitely have led lighting over our tank, given the advantages they have, especially when it will be possible to have a greater lumens watts than offered today, say around 180/200 lumens per watt to compete with lamps of 250 watts HQi and also 250/300 lumens per watt for 400 watt, and above all a general decline in prices, still quite high.
Even AndreaNegu, owner of a beautiful aquarium already the subject of several photos here into DaniReef.com and tank of the month of AcquaPortal , in his last tank has decided to change from his T5 lighting with 10 neon, to the wonderful double-E power with manta and blue EliteXP, which is among others one of the first blue EliteXP to be delivered on the market.
The tank as you can see is very beautiful, and all photos of this article are clickable.
As we said the blue EliteXP is one of the first to be delivered on the market, and is composed of 18 3-watt blue LEDs and 3 red LEDs. The power is remarkable, in a tank that measures 125×70 cm you can see with only 3 red led what we can have:
And with only blue LEDs:
We can see the tank from everywhere, it’s really amazing
And also to look at one of the most beautiful clam I ever seen in aquarium
The question that naturally arises is how much the tank has lost or improved by this change, I simply return the photos, leaving you to judge … and I’d like to read your comments.
Self made with 2 LED bars and 10x54w T5, with ATI reflectors:
And with Elos E-Power 2x250w HQi, with Elos Spectra 14.000 °K, Manta and the new Blue EliteXP
Any comments?

Ecotech Marine VorTech MP40: Our Complete Review
gennaio 19, 2012 by DaniReef.com
When EcoTech Marine presented the new Vortech MP40 to the aquarium market, a new era began. This product was very nice and soon acquired a lot of interest. It quickly became the “king” of the pumps even before it started functioning. The pump has an external part which incorporates the motor of the pump, this finally crates a pump that almost not noticeable in the tank. At those times it was something incredible.
And today? After many years that the pump has been released on the market, no one has had the courage or the patents in order to develop something similar to it. So up to now it remains the only external magnetic drive pump available in the aquarium market. Still today it remains a dream for many aquarium hobbyists.
